The main purpose for the landmark building design has been to get the maximum result in terms of memorability for turists and visitors.
The main idea to get this target has been to find a strong link with the local traditions and with culture of the town.
We choose the traditions of the Nanyue King we visited in the Museum of Nanyue King Tomb Treasures in Guangzhou.
We consider the shape of the double jade disk as the strongest shape inspiration and the perfect starting point for the GDPE Landmark Building design.
In particular we consider the iconic power of the jade disk shape as the most important feature for the building image. Jade, like bi disks, has been used throughout the Chinese history to indicate a person of moral quality and has also served as an important symbol of rank.
Bi disks were used in worship and ceremony – as ceremonial items they symbolised the ranks of emperor, king, duke, marquis, viscount, and baron with four different kweis and two different bi disks. We visited similar round shape building in Abu Dabi and in other locations, as well as other buildings with a hole in the middle but we think that a round building with a round hole built in Guangzhou will be the right building in the right location just because of this unique linkage with the local traditions and culture.
